Consultation

We would be happy to consult with you for up to an hour, free, just to discuss your situation with you, try to answer any questions you have, share with you other resources (including other mediators and facilitators), and to help you sort through your options and possible next steps.  Please feel free to call, 283-9227, or send an e-mail inquiry.

Coaching

If you find yourself in a situation that involves difficult communication, joint problem-solving, or negotiation, and you want an ally who will help you try to achieve mutually beneficial (between you and your counterpart(s)) improvements or solutions, consider engaging us in the role of coach.

As coach, we work for one party. [In contrast, as mediator or facilitator, our primary responsibility and our efforts to communicate extend to everyone involved.] Working in the role of coach we help our clients clarify and evaluate their situation, interests, priorities, options, and possible strategies.  We help people generate joint-gain possibilities when appropriate and possible. Sometimes we can deliver emotional, analytical, writing, editing, and/or organizational support. At times we can serve as a form of reality-check. Sometimes we can help identify useful resources.

Workshops

From time to time we do workshops or small trainings on topics related to constructive communication, interest-based negotiation, and consensus-building.

Sample workshops include the following topics:

  • "The Healing Power of Mindful Listening"
  • "Working Together: Communication, Conflict Resoulution, and Collaboration"
  • "Engaging Conflict Well" in the home and workplace
  • "Keys to Running Effective Meetings"
  • "Consensus Decision-Making: Why, When, and How"
  • "Emotional Intelligence at Work"

Who We Are

Who We Are

Horizon Mediation Services is a sole proprietorship established in 1995 by Heidi and Dan Chay.

We envision creative, self-determining, learning communities collaborating to adapt to the challenges of the next century.

We pursue our mission by assisting individuals, organizations, and communities toward this end -- providing mediation, process design, facilitation, consulting, and training services.

We approach our work and relationships with the fundamental values of respect, integrity, and continuous learning.

We are trained mediator/facilitators with education and experience in the fields of group process, conflict resolution, and creative consensus-building dating back to 1991. As a husband-and-wife team, we bring a unique energy to the projects we undertake as well as two sets of eyes, ears, and hands.

Heidi ChayHeidi Chay earned her M.A. in Sociology from the University of Hawaii in 1995 having done her thesis on the mediation of public policy disputes. She also holds a B.A. in East Asian Area Studies from Brown University. Her prior professional experience includes work as a foreign correspondent (China, 1988-90) and public radio reporter.

Dan ChayDan Chay earned his B.A. in History from Brown University in 1992. He has served on many boards, including a term as President of the Alaska Dispute Settlement Association. He served a term as an elected official on the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly (2004-2007). He has a professional background as a bush pilot and commercial fisherman. He also develops internet applications.

We speak several languages, have lived abroad and traveled extensively, and are sensitive to the challenges of intercultural interaction.

Since 1991, we have mediated in hundreds of cases including family, adult guardianship, child protection, neighbor-to-neighbor, small claims, victim-offender, business-client, employer-employee, landlord-tenant, partnership, family business, and intra-organizational conflicts. We also have taught numerous mediation and conflict resolution courses.
